Predictability horizon of oceanic rogue waves

چکیده

Prediction is a central goal and a yet-unresolved challenge in the investigation of oceanic rogue waves. Here we define a horizon of predictability for oceanic rogue waves and derive, via extensive computational experiments, a statistically converged predictability time scale for these structures. We show that this time scale is a function of the sea state (i.e., severity of the ambient ocean waves), the height of the anticipated rogue wave, and the level of uncertainties in the ocean measurements. The presented predictability time scale establishes a quantitative metric on the combined temporal effects of the variety of mechanisms that together lead to the formation of a rogue wave and is crucial for the assessment of validity of rogue wave predictions, as well as for the critical evaluation of results from the widely used model equations.

Sensitivity of Oceanic Rogue Waves Predictions to Measurements Uncertainties

Here we pose and answer the question of predictability of oceanic rogue waves: “How soon can we predict a rogue wave?”. We answer this question by considering, in its most general form, the governing Laplace’s equation with fully nonlinear boundary conditions. We look into a large number of rogue wave events, and discovered a statistically converged predictability time-scales which is a functio...

Rogue events in the group velocity horizon

The concept of rogue waves arises from a mysterious and potentially calamitous phenomenon of oceanic surfaces. There is mounting evidence that they are actually commonplace in a variety of different physical settings. A set of defining criteria has been advanced; this set is of great generality and therefore applicable to a wide class of systems. The question arises naturally whether there are ...

Predicting rogue waves in random oceanic sea states

Using the inverse spectral theory of the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation we correlate the development of rogue waves in oceanic sea states characterized by the JONSWAP spectrum with the proximity to homoclinic solutions of the NLS equation. We find in numerical simulations of the NLS equation that rogue waves develop for JONSWAP initial data that is “near” NLS homoclinic data, while rogue ...

Statistical Investigation of the Surface Profile of Rogue Waves in 2d Non-breaking Seas

Rogue waves or freak waves are very large amplitude waves compare to the ambient waves in a given sea state. There are very few recording of such waves and therefore, despite years of research, very little is known about their properties. Here we invoke a statistical approach to find out about the typical shape of these giant waves. We consider different sea states and unidirectional vs crossin...

Controlling the Occurrence of Rogue Waves in an Optically Injected Semiconductor Laser via Changing The Injection Strength

The rouge waves in an optically injected semiconductor lasers are receiving a lot of interest. In this work, the generating and controlling of the rogue waves in semiconductor lasers have been investigated. For this purpose, the laser’s rate equations are solved numerically in a specified time interval, then the field amplitude and the intensity versus time are calculated and analyzed. To solve...
